In addition to your A and B button combos, you're able to make use of counters, super moves, dashes and a variety of projectile attacks. That isn't to say that what you've come to expect from a modern fighting game isn't here, though. The fighting engine is simplistic, with very small move-lists per character, so the fighting can get repetitive. When not going at it with shuriken, supernatural ninja techniques, and plain old fists, he can be found chowing down on ramen or plying a date from his pink-haired teammate Sakura. To keep it simple, Naruto Uzumaki is a prankster student who has just graduated to full-fledged Ninja status, and alongside his teammates at the school, embarks on a series of missions which pit him against deadly enemies as well as constant challenges from his rivals. This isn't necessary for enjoyment of the game, and the single-player story mode does a good job of filling you in on the major characters, who they are, and what their motivations may be.

Now, there are plenty of hardcore fans of the Naruto series, so if you're not familiar with it you may want to take some time to watch the episodes or reference the countless Internet resources that can school you on the ins and outs of the plot and characters. Fans of the anime series aren't likely to be disappointed, as Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2 not only looks good, featuring cel-shaded characters that appear to have been stripped directly from the anime, but it rounds out the final entries in the GameCube library with a fun, character-driven story mode and a capable, four-player fighter that should have plenty of legs.

Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2 is one of the last noteworthy releases for the Nintendo GameCube, as the world prepares for the launch of the Wii. The series depicts students at a Ninja academy in a surprisingly comic mix of action-filled drama and the archetypical coming-of-age story. Shonen Jump's Naruto is one of the more popular anime franchises in the United States and Japan, alongside such hits as One Piece and Dragon Ball.
